Dee Dee Bridgewater @ Boem Radio

Η Dee Dee Bridgewater είναι μια σπουδαία Αμερικανίδα τραγουδίστρια της  jazz για περισσότερες από 5 δεκαετίες. Έχει κερδίσει τρία βραβεία Grammy, καθώς και ένα Tony σαν ηθοποιός. Για 23 χρόνια ήταν η παρουσιάστρια της ραδιοφωνικής εκπομπής JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater. Είναι Πρέσβειρα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών για την Διεθνή Οργάνωση Τροφίμων και Γεωργίας. Έχει κυκλοφορήσει 18 σόλο άλμπουμ (με αρκετές συμμετοχές ως καλεσμένη σε άλλους μεγάλους καλλιτέχνες), με το πλέον πρόσφατο “Memphis… Yes, I’m ready” όντας η αφορμή για την συναυλία της στην Αθήνα στις 13 Νοεμβρίου στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών. Είναι μεγάλη τιμή για εμάς η συνέντευξη που μας παραχώρησε και ακολουθεί: 

Συνέντευξη με την Dee Dee Bridgewater 

Boem: Πριν ξεκινήσουμε, θα ήθελα να σας ευχαριστήσω εκ των προτέρων για τον χρόνο που διαθέτετε για να απαντήσετε στις ερωτήσεις του Boem Radio. Είμαστε παραπάνω από σίγουροι ότι οι ακροατές μας θα απολαύσουν αυτή τη συνέντευξη, όπως απολαμβάνουν και την μουσική σας! Το νέο σας album είναι το “Memphis…Yes I’m Ready”. Είστε πάντα έτοιμη για νέες προκλήσεις, νέες περιπέτειες και ίσως νέες μουσικές εμπειρίες;

Dee Dee Bridgewater: Κοιτάξτε, δεν είμαι πάντα έτοιμη (γελάει), αλλά προσπαθώ. Είμαι πάντα ανοιχτή για να εκτίθεμαι σε νέα πράγματα και νέες μουσικές πιθανότητες, εννοείται. Για μένα ήταν πολύ σημαντικό με αυτό τον δίσκο (“Memphis…Yes I’m Ready”) να επιστρέψω στην πόλη που γεννήθηκα και να προσπαθήσω να κάνω τη σύνδεση με το ξεκίνημα της ζωής μου, ως ανθρώπινο ον σ’ αυτόν τον πλανήτη. Οπότε, ήταν πολύ σημαντικό για μένα.

Boem: Να βρείτε τις ρίζες σας…

Dee Dee: Ναι, να βρω τις ρίζες μου πάλι, να καταλάβω πράγματα για τους γονείς μου, τον πατέρα μου, την μητέρα μου. Να πάρω μια καλύτερη ιδέα πως ήταν στα νεανικά τους χρόνια και πως έγινα μέρος της ζωής του αυτά τα πρώτα χρόνια. Γιατί αυτά τα πρώτα χρόνια είναι αυτά που σε διαμορφώνουν. Τα χρόνια που είσαι ένα παιδί με τις πρώτες εντυπώσεις από τον κόσμο γύρω σου. Οπότε, ήταν σημαντικό να επιστρέψω και να τα δω όλα αυτά.

Boem: Αυτό με βοηθάει να περάσω στη δεύτερη ερώτηση. Υπήρξε κάποια στιγμή στη ζωή σας, που μπορεί να είχατε δεύτερες σκέψεις για τη μουσική διαδρομή σας; Που στην αρχή, ίσως σκεφτήκατε να τραγουδήσετε πιο δημοφιλή τραγούδια;

Dee Dee:  Ξεκίνησα να τραγουδάω επαγγελματικά, γιατί μου έφερνε τόση χαρά! Ήμουν απλώς περίεργη. Είχα μεγαλώσει σε ένα σπίτι που οι γονείς μου άκουγαν jazz κι εγώ μπορούσα να τραγουδήσω. Είχα την ικανότητα να τραγουδάω από πάντα. Στο ξεκίνημα μου οι γονείς μου με άφησαν να εξερευνήσω την μουσική που μου άρεσε, ήταν πολύ υποστηρικτικοί. 

Boem: Ήταν κάτι που σας έβγαινε φυσικά.

Dee Dee: Ναι, ήταν πολύ φυσικό. Γεννήθηκα με την ικανότητα να τραγουδάω και νόμιζα ότι όλοι μπορούν να τραγουδήσουν. Ένιωσα έκπληξη, όταν κατάλαβα ως έφηβη ότι δεν μπορούν όλοι να τραγουδήσουν. Ότι η ίδια μου η μητέρα δεν μπορούσε να τραγουδήσει! Ότι η αδερφή μου μπορούσε, αλλά όχι και τόσο καλά! 

Boem: Τι συμβουλή θα δίνατε σε ένα νέο τραγουδιστή/ τραγουδίστρια που ζητάει τη γνώμη σας για την καριέρα του ή τον ίδιο/ίδια; 

Dee Dee: Το πρώτο πράγμα που λέω στους νέους ανθρώπους που θέλουν να γίνουν επαγγελματίες τραγουδιστές ή μουσικοί είναι ότι θα πρέπει να έχουν και ένα σχέδιο βήτα. Είναι ένα δύσκολο επάγγελμα και σήμερα έχει γίνει ακόμα δυσκολότερο. Κάτι άλλο που μοιράζομαι μαζί τους είναι ότι είναι ένα επάγγελμα και θα πρέπει να καταλάβουν τις δυσκολίες του. Προσπαθώ να τους πω ότι θα πρέπει να μάθουν όσο περισσότερα μπορούν για το επαγγελματικό κομμάτι του θέματος: Πως να διαβάζουν ένα συμβόλαιο , για παράδειγμα, ή πως να παρουσιάζουν στον κόσμο την εικόνα που θέλουν να έχουν. Αλλά το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα, είναι κατά πόσον έχουν το ταλέντο. Το πραγματικό ταλέντο. Αν κάποιος αγαπάει την μουσική, αλλά δεν πιστεύω ότι έχει αρκετό ταλέντο, θα του πω «Νομίζω ότι θα μπορούσες να ασχοληθείς με την μουσική ως χόμπι ή διασκέδαση, αλλά δεν θα σου πρότεινα να το κάνεις επαγγελματικά». Προσπαθώ να είμαι πολύ ειλικρινής με τους ανθρώπους και ιδιαίτερα με τους νέους ανθρώπους. 

Boem: Και αυτό είναι πολύ καλό εκ μέρους σας, κατά τη γνώμη μου. Μετά από 3 Grammys, ένα Tony, παγκόσμια επιτυχία και αποδοχή της καλλιτεχνικής σας αξίας, είναι η πρώτη φορά που θα έρθετε να τραγουδήσετε στην Αθήνα. Πως νιώθετε για αυτό; 

Dee Dee: Δεν είναι η πρώτη μου φορά, έχω έρθει στην Αθήνα αρκετές φορές. 

Boem: Ωχ, κάτι δεν έκανα σωστά στο homework μου. Με συγχωρείτε!

Dee Dee: Δεν πειράζει! Έχω κάνει επίσης διακοπές στην Αθήνα και στην Ελλάδα. Από τις πιο όμορφες διακοπές μου ήταν οι διακοπές που έκανα Χριστούγεννα και Πρωτοχρονιά. Προσπαθώ να θυμηθώ ποια χρονιά ήταν, πάντως όχι στη δεκαετία του ’90 γιατί ζούσα στη Γαλλία. Έφερα, μάλιστα, και την οικογένεια μου στην Αθήνα και περάσαμε μαζί τις χριστουγεννιάτικες διακοπές μας. 

Boem: Οπότε, δεν ήταν οι τυπικές ελληνικές διακοπές σε νησιά το καλοκαίρι, αλλά κάτι διαφορετικό: Χριστούγεννα στην Αθήνα. 

Dee Dee: Ναι, ήταν πανέμορφα. Ήθελα να έρθουμε σε επαφή, τα παιδιά μου και ο πρώην άντρας μου, με κάποια από την ιστορία της Αθήνας, την αρχαία Ελλάδα και να επισκεφθούμε τα μνημεία. Η χώρα σας και η πόλη της Αθήνας είναι από τις πιο όμορφες που έχω επισκεφτεί σε όλο τον κόσμο. Ήθελα να έρθουμε σε επαφή με όλο αυτό. Φυσικά έχω κάνει και διακοπές σε ελληνικά νησιά και είχε ενδιαφέρον, αλλά ήταν πιο πολύ για χαλάρωση. Αλλά η Αθήνα; Την αγαπώ αυτή την πόλη, αλήθεια την αγαπώ. 

Boem: Σας ευχαριστούμε πολύ για τα καλά σας λόγια. Ποια είναι η γνώμη σας για τις απονομές και τα βραβεία (Oscars, βραβεία Nobel, Grammys, Pulitzer); Συμφωνείτε γενικά με αυτά; 

Dee Dee: Νομίζω ότι είναι ωραίο όταν αναγνωρίζεται η δουλειά σου, αναλόγως του επαγγέλματος σου. Υπάρχουν, για παράδειγμα, βραβεία για τους δημοσιογράφους. Είναι πάντα υπέροχο να σε ξεχωρίζουν και να βραβεύουν τη δουλειά σου. Αυτό που προσπαθώ να πω στους ανθρώπους είναι να μην κάνουν το βραβείο στόχο τους. Βάλε ως στόχο το να κάνεις καλή δουλειά, να είσαι ειλικρινής και αυθεντικός και θα ανταμειφθείς. Και δεν είναι απαραίτητο ότι η ανταμοιβή θα έρθει με ένα βραβείο. Είναι να μείνεις πιστός στα πιστεύω σου και στην Τέχνη σου. Να κάνεις το καλύτερο που μπορείς. Αυτό θα φέρει την αναγνώριση. Και πολύ περισσότερο, το να έχεις κοινό που πιστεύει σε εσένα και στην τέχνη σου. Αυτό είναι το σημαντικό. 

Boem: Κι εσείς έχετε πολύ κοινό που σας ακολουθεί και σας στηρίζει. Το έχετε κερδίσει αυτό.

Dee Dee: Είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων που στην ηλικία μου, είμαι ακόμα μια καλλιτέχνης που έχει ζήτηση, που μπορώ ακόμα να δώσω συναυλίες σε όλο τον κόσμο και άνθρωποι ξοδεύουν χρόνο από τη μέρα και τη ζωή τους για να οργανωθούν και να έρθουν να μοιραστούν ένα απόγευμα τους μαζί μου. Το εκτιμώ πολύ και νιώθω πολύ ταπεινή. Πολλοί καλλιτέχνες δεν σκέφτονται τι χρειάζεται για μια συναυλία και πόσοι άνθρωποι εμπλέκονται για να πραγματοποιηθεί μια συναυλία και πόσο συνεισφέρουν στην επιτυχία της. Χρειάζονται πολλοί άνθρωποι. Εμείς, αυτή τη στιγμή μιλάμε, εξαιτίας της συναυλίας. Μιλάω σε σένα, εκτίθεμαι στους ακροατές του σταθμού σας και, ίσως, κάποιος από αυτούς ακούσει τη συνέντευξη και του γεννηθεί η περιέργεια να έρθει στη συναυλία μου. Το καταλαβαίνω αυτό και το εκτιμώ πολύ που διέθεσες χρόνο για να μου πάρεις συνέντευξη, να μου κάνεις ερωτήσεις για τη ζωή μου… Μου δίνετε αξία και το εκτιμώ αυτό. 

Boem: Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ. Είναι τόσο ταπεινό και σημαντικό εκ μέρους σας να τα λέτε αυτά. Η επόμενη ερώτηση είναι για τη θέση σας ως Πρέσβειρα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών για τον Οργανισμό Τροφίμων και Γεωργίας.  Ποια είναι η εμπειρία που αποκομίσατε από αυτή τη θέση; Πιστεύετε ότι οι καλλιτέχνες πρέπει να έχουν πιο ενεργό ρόλο στα κοινωνικά ζητήματα (προσφυγικό, οικονομική κρίση κλπ); 

Dee Dee: Είναι κάτι το προσωπικό για έναν καλλιτέχνη το να εμπλακεί σε κάτι με ανθρωπιστικό τρόπο. Πρέπει να προέρχεται από την καρδιά του. Μου είχε ζητηθεί να γίνω πρέσβειρα καλής θελήσεως για ένα συγκεκριμένο παράρτημα του Οργανισμού Τροφίμων και Γεωργίας. Ήταν το όραμα του ανθρώπου που ήταν Γενικός Διευθυντής εκείνη την περίοδο. Είναι ο Jacques Diouf από τη Σενεγάλη. Ξεκίνησε ένα πρόγραμμα που βρίσκω αξιοθαύμαστο και που κάνει τους ανθρώπους που εμπλέκονται με αυτό περήφανους και τους γεμίζει μ ένα είδος αυτοπεποίθησης. Ήταν ένα πρόγραμμα συνεργασίας που ξεκίνησε με γυναίκες και, ως γυναίκα, καταλαβαίνω τον σημαντικό ρόλο που παίζουν (οι γυναίκες) στην κοινωνία, την οικογένεια, σε ένα χωριό και εκεί στοχεύουν αυτά τα προγράμματα. Σε εξαθλιωμένα χωριά μπορέσαμε να φέρουμε ανθρώπους από άλλες χώρες, οι οποίοι βοήθησαν τους χωρικούς να «πατήσουν στα πόδια τους», μέσω των γυναικών. Είναι ένα όμορφο πρόγραμμα που ακόμα συνεχίζεται. 

Επισκέφθηκα πολλά χωριά στη Δυτική Αφρική και τη Σενεγάλη συγκεκριμένα, αλλά και το Μάλι και είδα πως δουλεύει το πρόγραμμα και τα οφέλη του. Πίστευα ότι ήταν καλύτερο να εργαστώ για να βρω τροφή και να κάνω πιο ανεξάρτητους τους ανθρώπους, όπως το είχε οραματιστεί ο Jacques Diouf. Μπορούσες να δεις την περηφάνεια στις γυναίκες, όταν οι σοδειές τους γίνονταν πιο υγιείς ή όταν βελτιωνόταν το βιοτικό τους επίπεδο ή όταν έφερναν κι άλλες γυναίκες στο πρόγραμμα και τις εκπαίδευαν. Ήταν πανέμορφο. Η θέση μου από όταν παραιτήθηκε ο Jacques Diouf ήταν περισσότερο σαν διπλωμάτης. Έχω κληθεί πολλές φορές στα Ηνωμένα Έθνη στη Νέα Υόρκη για να μιλήσω εκ μέρους του Οργανισμού Τροφίμων και Γεωργίας. Πολλές φορές μου έχει ζητηθεί να έρθω στη Ρώμη που είναι τα κεντρικά του Οργανισμού, πχ για την Παγκόσμια ημέρα Διατροφής (16 Οκτωβρίου) ή για τις κινήσεις του Οργανισμού για την εξάλειψη της πείνας παγκοσμίως. Δεν γνωρίζω καλά όλα τα μέρη του προγράμματος, αλλά γνωρίζω αυτά που έχω εμπλακεί. 

Boem: Ήδη απαντήσατε στην ερώτηση που θα σας έκανα για το αν είδατε κάτι που σας έκανε να συνειδητοποιήσετε ότι προσφέρετε στους ανθρώπους, οπότε ας συνεχίσουμε! Μια δύσκολη ερώτηση για τη συνέχεια: Ποια ήταν η μεγαλύτερη φωνή του αιώνα; Η Ella (Fitzgerald), η Billie (Holiday) ή κάποια άλλη; 

Dee Dee: Δύσκολη ερώτηση! Δεν το βρίσκω δίκαιο να πω ότι μια φωνή ήταν η μεγαλύτερη. Υπάρχουν πολύ ωραίες φωνές και το να προσπαθήσω να πω Ella ή Billie είναι πολύ άδικο, γιατί ήταν τόσο διαφορετικές. Είναι πολύ μεγάλες φωνές για τελείως διαφορετικούς λόγους. Θα έλεγα μάλλον ότι η φωνή της Billie Holiday έφτανε πιο μακριά. Νομίζω ότι η φωνή της Ella δημιουργούσε χαρά και δεν νομίζω ότι θα έχουμε ποτέ ξανά μια τέτοια jazz φωνή, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της δικιάς μου. Η Ella είχε αυτή την μουσική αίσθηση από την σκοπιά του μουσικού και μια μοναδική ελευθερία στο τραγούδι. Αλλά, όταν μιλάμε για την Billie Holiday, μιλάμε για τη φωνή που μπορεί να «σε κάνει κομμάτια». Δεν είναι η καλύτερη φωνή, αλλά είναι κάτι σε αυτή και στην έκφραση της που σε στοιχειώνει. Πολλές φορές όταν είμαι εκτός Αμερικής ή ακόμα και στην Αμερική και ρωτάω κάποιον, αν ξέρει την Ella, απαντάει «Ναι νομίζω», αλλά όταν ρωτάω για την Billie, η απάντηση είναι «Ω ναι». Αλλά, μπορεί να έχει να κάνει με την τραγικότητα της ζωής της Billie. Νομίζω ότι όλους, ως ανθρώπινα όντα, μας τραβάει η τραγωδία. Ξέρεις, πράγματα που συμβαίνουν και είναι τραγικά. Αυτές είναι οι προσωπικότητες που θυμόμαστε, τουλάχιστον σε αυτή τη χώρα. 

Boem: Και στη δική μας το ίδιο, πιστέψτε με. 

Dee Dee: Νομίζω έχει να κάνει με το γεγονός ότι μας τραβάνε οι άνθρωποι που έχουν υποφέρει, έχουν προσπαθήσει να το ξεπεράσουν, αλλά στο τέλος αυτός ο πόνος κερδίζει και τους ρίχνει κάτω. Στη χώρα μου η Billie Holiday είναι δίπλα στην Merilyn Monroe και τον James Dean, για παράδειγμα, επειδή οι ζωές τους τέλειωσαν με τραγικό τρόπο. Η Janis Joplin, ο Jimi Hendrix, όλοι αυτοί ανήκουν στην ίδια κατηγορία. 

Boem:  Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ. Τελευταία ερώτηση: Ο σταθμός μας είναι το BOEM radio. Τι σημαίνει για εσάς BOEM ή τι είναι BOEM στη ζωή σας; 

Dee Dee: (Γελάει). Όταν ακούω BOEM, γράφεται B-O-E-M, αλλά εγώ το καταλαβαίνω ως μποέμ, οπότε δεν ξέρω τι σημαίνει Boem! 

Boem: ΒΟΕΜ όπως ο σταθμός μας σημαίνει Being Over Every Mind, αλλά μπορείτε να το ερμηνεύσετε όπως θέλετε. 

Dee Dee: Το βασικό είναι να έχουμε τα μυαλά μας ανοιχτά. Να μην κλείνουμε έξω από αυτά ότι υπάρχουν κι άλλες δυνατότητες, άλλοι τρόποι που μπορούν να είναι τα πράγματα στη ζωή. Το να είναι κάποιος μποεμ σημαίνει να ζει έξω από αυτό που ονομάζουμε κανονικότητα. Κάποιος που επιλέγει να ζήσει τη ζωή του με τον τρόπο που θέλει και όχι σύμφωνα με τις κοινωνικές νόρμες. Νομίζω ότι ταιριάζω αρκετά στο BOEM radio! (Γελάει), γιατί είναι τόσο εγώ. Πιστεύω ότι αν επιτρέψουμε στην Μουσική να μας αγγίξει, μπορεί να μας γιατρέψει και να μας ελευθερώσει. Η Μουσική δίνει την έμπνευση και το κουράγιο να προχωρήσεις στη ζωή και να πάρεις σημαντικές αποφάσεις. Τουλάχιστον, έτσι έχει κάνει σε μένα. Μου έχει δώσει πολλή πνευματική ελευθερία, μια αίσθηση φυσικής ελευθερίας και αντίληψη του χώρου και του χρόνου στο χώρο. Είναι ένα πανέμορφο πράγμα, η Μουσική. Αισθάνομαι ευλογημένη και ελπίζω ότι η μουσική μου μπορεί να δώσει λίγη ευλογία στους ακροατές και να πάρουν λίγη αίσθηση Boem από την μουσική, όπως παίρνω κι εγώ. Είναι τιμή μου που μίλησα μαζί σου, σ’ ευχαριστώ. 

Boem: Είμαστε ευλογημένοι που σας ακούμε να τραγουδάτε! Είναι ένα υπέροχο συναίσθημα. Σας ευχαριστώ για άλλη μια φορά, κυρία Bridgewater!

Dee Dee Bridgewater is a great American jazz singer for over of 5 decades now. She is a three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, as well as a Tony Award-winning stage actress. For 23 years, she was the host of National Public Radio's syndicated radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater. She is a United Nations Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization. She has released 18 solo albums (and numerous collaborations as guest), with the most recent one “Memphis… Yes, I’m ready” being the cause for having her in a live show here in Athens at the 13th of November in Megaron Mousikis Athinon. We feel very honored for giving us the Interview that follows:

Boem: To begin, I want to thank you in advance for your time to answer our questions for Boem Radio. We are more than certain that our listeners will enjoy this interview, as much as they enjoy your music! The new album is “Memphis…Yes I’m Ready”. Are you always ready for new challenges, new adventures and maybe new music experiences?

Dee Dee Bridgewater: Well, I’m not always ready (she laughs), but I try to. I always keep myself open to be exposed to new things and new musical possibilities, absolutely. For me it was very important with this album (“Memphis…Yes I’m Ready”) to go back to the city where I was born, to try to make that connection with that beginning part of my life as a human being on this planet. So, it was very important for me.

Boem: To find your roots again…

Dee Dee: Yes, to find my roots again, to understand about my parents, my father, my mother, to get a better idea where they were at and they young lives and how I become a part of their lives at those first years. Because, these first years are the formative years. The years when you are a child with the first impressions of the world around you. So, it was important for me to go back and see all of that. 

Boem: This assists me to ask you the second question. Was there a moment in your life that you may have had second thoughts about your music course, for example singing more popular songs at your beginning?

Dee Dee:  Well, at the beginning I started singing professionally because it brought me so much joy. I was just being curious. I had grown up in a household that my parents listened to jazz music, my mother listened to some wonderful fingers and I could sing. I was always able to sing. My beginning was a time when my parents allowed me to explore that music I liked, they were very supportive. 

Boem: It was something that came naturally for you.

Dee Dee: Yes, it was very natural. I was born able to sing. I thought everyone could sing. I was surprised when I started realizing as a teenager that people could not sing. That my own mother could not sing! That my sister could sing, but not very well.

Boem: Is there any advice you could give to a new singer that asks for your opinion about him/her or his/her career?

Dee Dee: For young people who want to go into the music profession as singers or musicians, the first thing I tell them is they had better have a back-up plan. It is a difficult profession and it is becoming more and more difficult today. Another thing I try to share with the young singers and musicians is that they need to understand the difficulties of this business and that it is also a business. I try to tell them to learn as much as they can about the business side of things: How to read a contract for example, how to dress and project the kind of image that they want people to understand about them. And then, the most important thing is whether or not (they) have the talent. The true talent. If someone likes the music, but I don’t feel that talent is strong I am the person that will say “I think you could do this as a hobby or enjoyment, but I won’t suggest that you make this a career or a profession”. I try to be very honest with people. And young people in particular.

Boem:  And this is very good of you in my opinion. After 3 Grammys, a Tony, global success and awareness of your artistic value, it is the first time that you will come to sing in Athens, Greece. How do you feel about it?

Dee Dee: Oh, no, it’s not my first time. I have been to Athens several times.

Boem: Oh, you caught me not having my homework done. 

Dee Dee: That is ok. I have also spent vacations in Greece and in Athens. One of the most wonderful vacations was Christmas and New Year’s vacation. I’ve been trying to remember what year it was, but it wasn’t the ‘90s as I as living in France. I brought my family to Athens in Christmas and New Year’s vacations in Athens.

Boem: So it was not the typical vacation in Greece with islands in summer, but Christmas in Athens. Something different.

Dee Dee: Yes. It was beautiful. I wanted to expose myself and my children and my now ex-husband-but we were married then, to some of the history of Athens, the ancient Greece and visit all the monuments. Your country and the city of Athens is one of the most wonderful I’ve been in the world. I just wanted to get that exposure to all of us. Of course, I have also done vacation on the islands and that’s interesting, but that was more for relaxation. But Athens? I love that city. I really do.

Boem: Thank you very much for your kind words. What is your opinion about nominations and awards in general (Oscars, Nobel prizes, Grammys, Pulitzer)? Is it something you agree with?

Dee Dee: I think that it is nice to have your works acknowledged in different manners depending on one’s line of work. There are awards for journalism for example. It is always wonderful to be singled out and to be awarded for one’s work. What I try to say to people is do not make the award your objective. Make doing  good work your objective if you do good work and if you are honest and genuine about your work, you will be awarded. And it’s not necessarily getting a trophy that it’s going to bring that reward or that award. It’s about staying true to one’s beliefs and one’s art. Doing the best you can. That is what it’s going to bring about recognition. And more than that is to have a public that believes in you and in your art. That is what’s important.

Boem: And you have a lot of listeners that follow you and support you. You have achieved that.               

Dee Dee: I’m very grateful that at my age I’m still an artist that is in demand, I still do concerts around the world that people take time out of their lives and days to organize and come and share an evening with me. I am very appreciative and very humble by that. Many artists do not think all that goes into one concert and all the people who are involved making that concert happen and hopefully contributing to the success of one concert. It takes many people. We are speaking because of the concert. I am speaking to you, I am being exposed to your radio public and maybe one is going to listen to our interview and become curious and want to come to my show. I am aware of this and I am appreciative that you take the time to interview me, to ask me questions about my life. You give me importance and I appreciate that. 

Boem: Thank you, that’s very important. It’s so humble and important of you to say these words. The next question is about your position as an UN Ambassador for the Food and Agricultural Organization. What’s the experience that you gained from that position? Do you believe that artists should have a more active role in social issues? For example with refugees, economic crisis, politics etc?

Dee Dee: It is something personal for an artist to become involved in a humanitarian way. It has to come from the heart of the individual. I was asked to be a good will ambassador for a particular branch of the Food and Agricultural Organization. It was the vision of a man who was the General Director at that time. His name is Jacques Diouf from Senegal. He started a program that I thought was most admirable and also would make the people involved in it proud and bring about a kind of self-confidence for them. It was a cooperative program that he began with women, and being a woman I understand the important role that the woman plays in the society, in the family, in a village and that’s where these programs are done. In impoverished villages where we were able to bring in people from other countries, to help the villagers to sustain themselves better, but through the women. It was a beautiful program that still continues. 

I visited several villages in West Africa, in Senegal in particular, but also in Mali and I was able to see how this program works and the benefits from it. I thought it was better to do the work of bringing food or helping people become self-efficient in a way that Jacques Diouf had the vision for. You could see the pride in the women when their crops were healthier or their lifestyle was well and when and they were able to bring other women into the program and teach them. That was beautiful. My position since Jacques Diouf stepped down has been more as a diplomat. I have been called on several occasions to the United Nations in New York City to speak on behalf of the FAO for different events that have happened. I’m not really connected that much with the cooperative program.  I am often asked to come to Rome which is the Headquarters of the FAO for World Food Day (October 16th) and sometimes to speak about what FAO is doing in terms of trying to eliminate world hunger. There are some areas in the agricultural program that I’m not accord with but I’m accord with the parts that I’m involved. 

Boem: You already answered my question about anything that you saw or experienced and realized that you are doing something that helps people, so let’s move on! A difficult question now: Who was the greatest voice of the last century? Ella (Fitzgerald), Billie (Holiday) or someone else?

Dee Dee: That’s a difficult question! I don’t find it fair to say that one voice was the greatest voice. There are many great voices and to try to say Ella, or Billie for me is very unfair because those were completely different. They are great voices and for completely different reasons. I would probably say that the voice that has the most far reaching effect has been Billie Holiday over Ella. I think that Ella brought us joy and I don’t think that we will never have a jazz voice, myself included, like Ella’s, where she had this musical sense from a musician’s point of view and this kind of vocal freedom that she experienced. But then you go to Billie Holiday and here is the voice that can rip your soul apart. It’s not the greatest voice but there is something about the temper of her voice, the phrasing that she does that is haunting. When I often am outside of the Unites States or even in the United States and ask someone if he knows Ella he says “yes, maybe”, but when I ask about Billie Holiday “Oh yes”. But it may also have to do with the tragedy of Billie Holiday’s life. We are all I think, as human beings, attracted to tragedy, you know things that happen and are terrible. Those seem to be the personalities that we remember, at least at this country.

Boem: In our country too, believe me. 

Dee Dee: I think it has to do that we are drawn to people who have suffered and they tried to rise above it, but their suffering in the end is what brings them down. In our country for example Billie Holiday is right up there with Merilyn Monroe, or James Dean for example, because their lives ended tragically. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, they are all in that particular category.

Boem: Thank you very much. This is the last question: Our radio station is BOEM radio, but what is BOEM about your life or what does BOEM mean to you?

Dee Dee: (She laughs). When I hear Boem is spelled B-O-E-M but I understand Boem like bohemian. So, I don’t know what boem means! 

Boem: Boem as our radio station means Being Over Every Mind but you can interpret it as you want.

Dee Dee: The thing that is important is to keep our minds open. To not close ourselves from thinking that there are other possibilities in life, other ways that things can be in life. And if I think boem like a bohemian that for me means someone who lives a little outside of what is considered the norm. Someone who chooses to live his life the way he wants to do it and not according to social norms. I think that I fit very well within your BOEM radio (she laughs), because that’s very much me. I think if we allow music to touch us, music can heal us, music can free us. Music gives the inspiration and the courage to go through life and make important decisions. At least this what music has done for me. It has given me a great deal of spiritual freedom, a physical sense of freedom, a great appreciation of space and time in space. It’s a wonderful thing, this music. I feel blessed and I hope that my music brings blessings to your listeners and that they can get some of this Boem sense from the music that I do. I am very honored to speak with you, so thank you.

Dee Dee: Thank you so much, I really enjoyed our conversation and I’m so looking forward to coming back to Athens, because it has been a few years since the last time.
